For various reasons some people choose not to use a fireplace for its intended function: as a place to build a fire, usually for warmth. Even if you don't want to use your fireplace to radiate heat into your house, you can still use it to add some style to the room. There are plenty of different ways to decorate the inside of a fireplace to add some interest to the room.
Fill the Fireplace with Candles

Imagine several different pillar candles of all different sizes lit inside the fireplace. This is a great way to still get some warmth and light from the fireplace without turning it on. Be sure that you have the candles of fireproof plates or containers. You can even use decorative plats and holders to add even more interest to the inside of the fireplace. The candles make a great décor piece, lit or unlit. Some prefer sticking with all plain off-white candles, while others may want to get more adventurous and mix different colors and styles of candles.
Add a Flower Arrangement inside the Fireplace
Add some great color to the fireplace by placing a large flower arrangement inside or right outside of the fireplace. Use a decorative basket or vase with the flowers for an added touch. Be sure that you measure the opening of the fireplace before you buy or make your flower arrangement. You don't want it too overpowering, and it should not be touching the inside walls but should be several inches away. Try a T-shaped arrangement for the best fit inside the fireplace.
Use a Decorative Fireplace Screen for the Area
If you rather not see the inside of your fireplace, then go with a nice decorative fireplace screen to place in front of the opening. There are some very nice screens that are available and many different kinds to choose from. You are bound to find one that matches the décor of your room and goes well with the style of the fireplace. This works well for people who may have really old fireplaces and haven't gotten around to having them re-finished yet.
Make it Look like a Real Fireplace with Wood Logs
Even if you don't light your fireplace you can still enjoy the aspect and features of it. Simply add some nice wood logs (real or fake) and arrange them in a pleasing pattern. When people come to your home, they won't even know if your fireplace doesn't work or if you don't use it. Be sure to clean the fireplace before placing the logs in there, and now you can enjoy your scene without the hassle of a real fire.
