What's in a bookcase? Well, obviously, books, but actually there's a lot more. Besides giving you a way to store and organize your reading material, owning an attractive high quality bookcase shows that you are well read and gives you an opportunity to display your interests. It also adds an important design element to your home.
Solid Oak Bookcases
Very much like the earliest bookcases that adorned the elegant libraries of Europe in the middle ages, solid woods are still used on most high quality bookcases. To this day, solid oak is the material of choice in that it affords durability, style, and beauty. It is used in many styles that are popular today, including Mission, Traditional, Colonial, Shabby Chic, and Contemporary.

It's best to buy your bookcases with adjustable shelves so that you can modify them to fit your books and get maximum efficiency out of the space. Group your books by size, so that your small paperbacks will take up less height in the bookcase and your larger ones can be accommodated.
You can buy bookcases that have open shelves. Again, we stress the benefit of adjustable shelves. This will allow you to store any size book or other item you chose to display. Most bookcases are 12" deep. A way to store larger items, such as albums, pictures, larger books, and knickknacks, is to look for bookcases that are up to 18" deep. You can also buy bookcases that are shallow-about 8" deep-that can be used for paperbacks exclusively or for CD's.
Some bookcases have open shelves on top and doors on the bottom, which is very handy for storing games, art supplies, whatever you might need but want to keep out of sight below and display books on top.
You can find bookcases with glass doors that protect your reading material from dust particles and children's gooey fingers. Lawyer bookcases have glass doors that open up and slide in. They are classic and gorgeous, but do keep in mind, however, that they do not come with adjustable shelves. If you want glass doors, but prefer adjustable shelves, you might like a bookcase with glass door that open up to the side like French Doors. This is a great alternative, but remember that they do take up a little more space because you need the circumference of the door opening to be kept clear. If that is a problem, you might want to go with sliding glass doors on a bookcase. That should give you adjustable glass shelves and will take up less space from the rest of the room.
If you have a large wall to fill with bookcases, it's best to make sure they have flush sides so they can be lined up next to each other to fill the entire space.
A good way to figure out how large a bookcase you need is to measure the linear footage of the books you own and then calculate how much footage is available on the bookcase you are looking at. Take into consideration how you are going to adjust the shelves for the various sizes of your books. If you have lots of small paperbacks you'll have more running feet of space for them if you double up the shelves. In that case, you might want to see if you can order an additional shelf or two.
Now, with the advent of flat TV's, you can use bookcases to surround your TV, pretty much like an entertainment center would. You could even rest the TV on the bookcase, but you would probably still need to bolt it to the wall for security.
Bookcases are now not only used to store your items, they can also define your space and decorate the room. Matching pieces can be added, such as desks, chairs, sofas, coffee tables, and beds. What was once a functional piece of furniture can now be a decorative addition to your home.
